How to make free website easy

Many website builders offer free packages, but sometimes 'free' is not what it seems. In many cases, you start building your site for free. But then, after doing all the work, you discover that the free package is way too limited to actually use. For example, 'free' website builders try to force you to conjure up your credit car

Two People using Electronic Devices

I decided to test some of the major website builders to find out which ones actually let you build a functional site for free. By "testing" I mean real testing. I built a demo site with every website builder on this list to see exactly what they let me do and didn't let me do with the free plan.

It was very interesting and I discovered some very surprising things along the way. Yes, all free builders have their limitations, but some let you do much more than others. Wix's free plan is probably the most generous, but I've also found some other good options that I can recommend.

Little time? These are the best free website builders

Wix – Offers a true drag-and-drop design, tons of customization options, tons of free apps, and much more

Squarespace – a simple website builder for minimalistic, eye-catching designs that also offers great marketing integrations

SITE123 – A very easy to use site builder with useful tools to grow a small business

Features & Ease of Use

If you're building your very first site or just want to try out Wix, here are the features that might interest you the most:

800+ Templates – One of the best features of Wix is its huge library of templates. Some templates are better than others, some are a bit dated, but in my professional opinion most of them are quite good.

Complete drag-and-drop freedom – What makes Wix's editor so popular is the fact that you can drag and drop anything anywhere on the page. Well, almost everywhere, but it still gives a lot of creative freedom compared to other builders.

Blog Tools – The Wix Blog is technically one of the “apps”, but it is free and not that bad at all. You can create engaging, custom blog posts, although you can't just drag and drop content like you do in the site's main editor.

And now there's a small downside: Due to the creative freedom and extensive site options, building a site with Wix is more complex than with some other platforms. This isn't too bad and you could probably create a great site in a matter of hours, but it might take you a while to get used to the way things work.

Plus, I found it really easy to be able to drag and drop things anywhere, which increases the chances of accidentally messing up your layout. It's not a big deal - that's what the 'undo' button is for - but it's worth noting.

If you're looking for an even easier way to build your site, you can use Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence). It's a lightly AI-powered tool that asks you a few questions and generates a site for you, complete with demo content. I used it to create the demo portfolio above in just a few minutes.

Free Apps – Wix App Market offers quite an impressive library of apps to extend the functionality of your site and even integrate with third-party services. Now not all of these apps are free. You may have to pay for some separately. But there are plenty of free apps to get you started with social media integration, advanced forms, event calendars, and much more.

Marketing tools – Want to promote your site? Wix does it for you with SEO tools, email marketing, a social post designer - and all for free. If you want more advanced analytics, try the "Site Booster" app, or take advantage of a few other perks like free ad space, you'll need to upgrade to a paid plan.
